On a very heavy pitch Whitburn started quickly and came close when Robert Murray latched onto a Michael Stafford pass only to see his shot well saved by the Washington Goalkeeper. However it was not long before the Whitburn pressure was rewarded when a Jack Oliver shot from just outside of the Washington penalty in the 15th minute flew into the Washington net after good work from Kristian Tyson. Whitburn thought they had gone further ahead when Michael Stafford headed home a Jack Oliver corner, only to see the goal disallowed. Whitburn’s misfortune continued when Jack Oliver was involved in a ferocious tackle which saw him sustain a gash to his right knee, which necessitated his substitution. Nevertheless, Whitburn maintain their pressure and just before half time the Washington defence, which had held steady under sustained pressure gave way again when Carl Maine passed to Shaun Usher who in turn found Robert Murray unmarked in the Washington penalty area with a well timed pass, Robert shot from an acute angle at close range to put Whitburn 2 goals in the lead at half time.
The start of the second half saw Whitburn’s domination continue , this leading to a good passage of play involving Calvin Quigley, Daniel Ward and finished off by a well struck shot into the net from outside of the Washington penalty area by Aidan Brook. Not long after scoring Aidan Brook turned provider when he intercepted a Washington misplaced clearance, carried the Ball forward before releasing a perfectly weighted pass to Robert Murray who ran into the Washington penalty area found the net again when he slotted the ball placed the advancing goalkeeper.
Whitburn scored their fifth when Kristian Tyson neatly controlled the ball on the edge of the Washington penalty area, after receiving a pass from Dean Afzal. Kristian delicately lobbed the ball over the advancing Washington keeper to score an excellent goal.
Washington to their credit continued to try and get something out of the game and when a ball was crossed into the Whitburn penalty area, which was only half clear Birthday boy Steven Usher was forced to make a lunging tackle which was viewed by the referee to warrant a penalty. Washington converted the penalty shooting passed the diving Whitburn Goalkeeper, Adam Don .
Whitburn response to conceding this goal was to pile more pressure on the Washington goal, with Daniel Ward, Michael Stafford, Robert Murray and Steven Usher coming close on a number of occasions. During the latter stages of the second half Thomas Bartram continued to work hard in midfield, making some powerful runs foward. However, after a neat passage of play involving Michael Stafford and Kristian Tyson in the Washington final third, Kristian provided a well timed pass to the feet of Calvin Quigley. It was left to Calvin to finish off an excellent team performance when he fired home into the Washington net from just outside of the penalty area. Calvin celebrating his goal with a well choreographed celebration with goalkeeper Adam Don,. All of the 16 player squad played in the game and all contributed to a good performance on a very heavy pitch, which was in some parts like a farmer’s ploughed field.
