Junior football in Whitburn started in 1989 when Jim Butler and others founded the Barnes Institute Boys Club.
WHITBURN & CLEADON teams first started to appear in the Russell Foster Tyne & Wear Youth Leagues in 1991.
At that time junior football was a section of Whitburn Community Association and steadily grew over the years.
In 2000 a new direction was taken as an affiliated organisation and Whitburn & Cleadon JFC adopted a new constitution, self-governance and independent banking facilities to allow the club to survive and grow.
In 2007, the global shipping and logistics company, MAERSK agreed to sponsor the club and this has ensured our survival and plans for the future. The club has committed to establishing closer links with the community and this is now taking place.
In the same year, Sunderland legend Len Ashurst agreed to be the Club patron.
The Club this year has teams from under 7s up to under 17s. We also have very busy Sunday Development sessions and we have built formal links with local primary schools.
Most significantly, in January 2008, the club was awarded Charter Standard status by the Football Association, official recognition of the good practice we have put in place over the past 8 years.
Whitburn & Cleadon JFC continues to thrive and grow - If you would like to learn more or contribute as a volunteer to the Club, please contact us.
